You're my obsession

My newest obsession? The Grand Canyon.

You see, I finished another book.
27. Sunk Without a Sound – The Tragic Colorado River Honeymoon of Glen and Bessie Hyde. Brad Dimock. This is a true story about a couple who disappeared in 1928 while rafting thru the Grand Canyon. A very intriguing story and well put together. It’s also one of the two books chosen for OneBookAZ. There’s a lot of history and scene setting and whitewater rafting info, but I wanted more.

So today I went to the library, supposedly to get Everything is Illuminated for next month’s book club. Well, I left having procured that and 4 other books, all about the Grand Canyon. I’m set for a while, especially since the second of the OneBookAZ books (also about the canyon) will be exchanged for shortly.

I’ve lived in Arizona for 6 years now. I’ve been to the Grand Canyon once, last summer with my parents. I was completely unprepared for it and immediately enraptured. Which is weird because I’m not really an outdoorsy, campy type girl. Unfortunately, we only spent part of a day there, riding the train up and back from Williams, which was pretty cool itself.

And the obsession within the obsession? I want to take a mule ride to the bottom of the canyon, stay overnight at Phantom Ranch and then mule it back up. This is completely unlike me, but I’m gonna do it. Hopefully at the end of the summer or beginning of the fall. And it’s going to rock.

And there should be no problem crocheting on muleback, right?

Sock update – Mom’s are in a box, sitting in the car, waiting for me to be outside at the same time a post office type place is open. This hasn’t happened yet. Dad’s are now at 1.5 cuffs.

I highly recommend hiking instead of riding a mule. I know it sounds hard but it really isn't that bad. Teetering on the edge of a cliff on the back of a mule, however? Terrifying.

I remember crossing the Royal Gorge Bridge (http://www.royalgorgebridge.com/) ... it swayed with people and the cars crossing it. Looking down over the railing was enough to put the fear of heights in me forever. But I agree, the Grand Canyon is a beautiful place and a "must see"
